ABSTRACT

High-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) is a potentially fatal neurological syndrome that develops in persons traveling to a high altitude. We report the case of a 49-year-old male who had traveled to a high altitude, and lost consciousness for a few hours. Susceptibility-weighted images revealed multiple, fine black pepper like microbleeds along the corpus callosum with several microbleeds in the left frontal and parietal subcortical white matter. The T2-weighted images did not show any abnormal signal intensities along the corpus callosum. The diffusion-weighted images revealed small nodular high signal intensities in the basal ganglia. This report describes the atypical radiologic findings of HACE showing multiple microbleeds along the corpus callosum, without abnormal high-signal intensity on T2-weighted images.

ABSTRACT

We report a case of Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) related disease involving the pterygoplataine fossa. A 83-year-old male presented with left ocular pain and visual disturbance. CT showed an isodense soft tissue lesion in the left pterygopalatine fossa with bony sclerotic changes and erosion. MRI revealed an infiltrative soft tissue mass in the left pterygopalatine fossa as a T2 slightly low signal intensity and heterogeneous enhancement. The patient underwent left ethmoidectomy, and biopsy of the mass was conducted. The histopathological diagnosis was IgG4-related disease. In this case, it was difficult to differentiate invasive aspergillosis, which is common in immunocompromised patients, considering the patient’s clinical history of diabetes mellitus. This report describes the imaging findings of IgG4-related disease mimicking invasive sinusitis such as invasive aspergillosis.

ABSTRACT

Collaborative work using same samples for the parentage testing, which was intended to see the status and the quality of several DNA typing laboratories in Korea, was described. Samples were consisted of two sets, one was a trio case and the other was a deficient case with two children. Samples were sent to six laboratories, among which five submitted the result. Each laboratory had used different number and set of STR loci using 14 - 23 loci, and total 33 different loci were used. Only one VNTR locus, D1S80 was included and all the remaining were STR loci. The loci included in the commercial kits were used more frequently. One laboratory had used Korean-made commercial kits. All the laboratories gave the same results about the parentage, although results for one locus were not the same through different laboratories. There existed minor difference in the PI calculation, especially in the statistical parameters such as allelic frequences, which might gave confusion to users of the results who were not familiar with the test. Necessity about the standardization and profiling data were discussed.

ABSTRACT

Heteroplasmy in the hypervariable region 1 of the mtDNA was screened using DGGE. Blood samples from 150 unrelated Koreans were used. Appropriate condition was set up using mixed samples with previously known HV1 sequences. This method is capable of detecting heteroplasmic proportion less than 5 %. Multiple bands pattern meaning heteroplasmy was observed in 41 individuals (27.3%). The majority of heteroplasmic variants could not be detected by direct sequencing of PCR products. For the distribution pattern of heteroplasmy in different tissues within one individual, 14 autopsy cases were screened. Out of these, two were heteroplasmic, but there was no difference between various tissues in the heteroplasmic DGGE band pattern.
